Brandon Brown, 33, was sentenced in federal court to 10 years in prison for strangling his ex-girlfriend, then attempting to talk her out of assisting with the subsequent criminal investigation in Washington, DC last year.
Federal prosecutors say that on April 19, 2022, Brown and his "on-again, off-again intimate partner" got into an argument about whether they had been cheating on each other that rapidly escalated to physical violence.
During the assault, Brown strangled his ex "with sufficient force that she 'blacked out,'" investigators said, and she temporarily lost her vision and became unconscious, "creating a grave risk of death."
Brown was apprehended without incident, though a week after the argument, while still in custody, he contacted the woman from jail in DC to persuade her to not come to court or help with the investigation.
He pleaded guilty in March to aggravated assault and obstructing justice and has been detained since his arrest.
